Research and development project GINOP-2.2.1-15-2017-00055 of the consortium led by VARINEX Zrt

Closing of the project entitled Research on osteosynthesis of implants and development of trabecular structure using Additive Manufacturing

VARINEX Zrt. submitted its application for support under the call for R&D competitiveness and excellence cooperation, registered under the identification number GINOP-2.2.1-15-2017-00055, to the Deputy State Secretariat for the Implementation of Economic Development Programs. The support was awarded to a consortium led by VARINEX Zrt., whose other members are: University of Debrecen, University of Nyíregyháza and Kereken-Pálya Kft.

During the four years of research supported by the grant, it was possible to develop a material structure that meets the increasing demands for bone and joint replacement implants made of metal at a higher level than the current one. Using animal experiments and image processing technologies planned in the project, our goal was to create a trabecular structure for titanium-based metal implants that ensures osteointegration better than any solution known to date.

Through the overlapping of project tasks, the materials development direction was established by the two universities participating in the project in cooperation with each other, and then we implemented direct feedback through the continuously arriving partial results of the animal experiments, which ensures the high-quality implementation of the multi-cycle development process and its internationally noteworthy results.

The aim of the project was to produce implants using Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology, which is significantly more time and cost-effective than current methods, which provide a higher degree of biocompatibility and biofunctionality for the human body, with faster healing and significantly longer usability. In addition, a further aim was to fully review the individual AM solutions, summarize the experiences necessary for daily surgical practice, and supplement them according to the needs of surgery, which needs may differ significantly from the AM solutions used and accepted in the industry.

In the field of bone and joint replacement implants, we examined the possibilities offered by AM technologies, including image processing algorithms and animal experiments, and together with practicing surgeons, we developed solutions to the individual emerging tasks in such a way that the resulting knowledge would be universally available to all individuals and organizations dealing with bone and joint implants.

Planned project implementation period: 2017.08.01. – 2022.01.31.

Total project budget: 2,000,000,000 HUF

Planned aid intensity: 83.26%
