Closing of the project entitled Research on osteosynthesis of implants and development of trabecular structure using Additive Manufacturing
The consortium led by VARINEX Zrt. implemented the project entitled Research on Osteosynthesis of Implants and Development of Trabecular Structure Using Additive Manufacturing, registered under the identification number GINOP-2.1.7-15-2016-0202 GINOP-2.2.1-15-2017-00055, within the framework of the Széchenyi 2020 program, which was established with a European Union grant of HUF 1,665,616,964. Other members of the consortium are: University of Debrecen, University of Nyíregyháza and Kereken-Pálya Kft.
During the four years of research supported by the grant, it was possible to develop a material structure that meets the increasing demands for bone and joint replacement implants made of metal at a higher level than the current one. By applying animal experiments and image processing technologies planned in the project, our goal was to create a trabecular structure for titanium-based metal implants that ensures osteointegration better than any solution known to date.
The main goal of the project was to produce implants using Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology, which is significantly more time- and cost-effective than current methods, that provide a higher degree of biocompatibility and biofunctionality for the human body, along with faster healing and significantly longer usability.
Our further goal was to comprehensively review the individual AM solutions, summarize the experiences necessary for daily surgical practice, and supplement them according to the needs of musculoskeletal surgery, which needs may differ significantly from the AM solutions used and accepted in the industry.

Through the overlapping of project tasks, the materials development direction was established by the two universities participating in the project in cooperation with each other, and then we implemented direct feedback through the continuously arriving partial results of the animal experiments, which ensured the high-quality implementation of the multi-cycle development process and its internationally noteworthy results.
Project implementation period: 2017.08.01. – 2022.01.31.
