A 3D scanner, an idea and an industrial 3D printer – when the creativity of engineers meets technology

At VARINEX, ideas are transformed into real, tangible solutions. Most recently, engineering creativity was put into the spotlight during an internal development project, when engineering colleagues provided a striking and modern response to an often-recurring challenge.

It all started with one question: how could I conveniently and securely mount the Shining3D Combo+ scanner when it was not in use?

The Shining3D Combo+ scanner is an excellent piece of equipment in the world of 3D digitization, but it lacked a secure holding device. Our engineer colleague Barnabás Horváth thought of something and scanned the scanner itselfso that the available accurate geometry could be used to work on the next step.

The design: form-following geometry

From a digital copy of the scanner, Tibor Kovács created a shape-following geometry holder. The device fits the scanner like a key into a lock – precisely, stably, and aesthetically.

Manufacturing: industrial quality with 3D printing

The finished design Stratasys industrial 3D printer was manufactured using black PC-ABS. But why was this material chosen?

Advantages of PC-ABS:

Mechanical strength: The combination of polycarbonate and ABS provides excellent impact resistance and structural stability.

Aesthetic surface: Provides a smooth, homogeneous appearance after printing, which is important in a demanding engineering environment.

Durability: PC-ABS provides reliable performance over the long term, does not deform or crack.

The end result: a fast, efficient, proprietary solution

The unique holder was completed within a few days, and the engineering team enjoyed not only solving the challenge but also the process of creating it. The project is a good example of how digitalization and manufacturing technology can be combined for immediate, practical purposes.
